Burundi is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Due to it's landlocked geography, decades of civil wars, poor legal system, lack of freedom and access to education and the proliferation of HIV/AIDS, Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Burundi's natural resources include uranium, nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum. Due to the lack of financial services in the country, there are many microfinance institutions operating to fill the void.
